Background on the Plant (Sceletium tortuosum)
Kanna, scientifically known as Sceletium tortuosum, is a succulent plant native to South Africa. This small, groundcover plant belongs to the Aizoaceae family and thrives in the arid regions of the Western and Eastern Cape provinces. The plant contains several bioactive alkaloids, including mesembrine, mesembrenone, and mesembranol, which are responsible for its psychoactive properties.
These alkaloids work primarily by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, similar to how some antidepressant medications function. However, kanna's mechanism is more complex, also affecting phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) enzymes, which may contribute to its mood-enhancing and cognitive effects.
